PSDTUTS Photoshop Wiki / Photoshop Tools / Eraser Tool

The Eraser Tool simply allows you to remove pixels from your image, as the name suggests. Like the paint brush, you can use a variety of brushes and settings to achieve this, but at the end of the day its purpose is to remove pixels. When it can't make erased pixels transparent, such as on the background layer, it will use the background swatch as its sample.

[edit] Other Eraser Tools

There are several different eraser tools besides the default eraser. There is a Background Eraser Tool and a Magic Eraser tool as well. Read about them in their individual articles.

[edit] Eraser Tool Customization

The eraser tool can be customized to fit your needs. As mentioned earlier, the eraser tool can be used as a brush, which will allow you to choose any of the brushes out of your brush library for erasing. Under "Mode:" one can also select Pencil and Block for the eraser's shape properties. The pencil selection will allow the user to use their brush library except none of the brushes will be anti-aliased, and none of the brush will be opaque. The Block option will use a solid square shape for the eraser. The eraser's opacity may also be altered for one's personal preference. The flow of the eraser tool may also be changed. As with the brush tool, the "Brush Presets" menu is also available to the eraser tool.
