PSDTUTS Photoshop Wiki / Photoshop Tools / Eyedropper Tool

The eyedropper tool is used to select colors for the foreground and background swatches, and determine what the attributes of a given color are. When you're using the brush or any tool that deals with color, hold down Alt to toggle between the eyedropper and the selected tool. This allows you to pick new colors on the fly without constantly changing tools.
