Guides are light blue lines that help you line up measurements and elements on your canvas. Once you’ve activated the rulers around your canvas, all you need to do is click on the ruler and drag to pull a guideline down. These lines do not print.
You must drag from the correct ruler to get the correctly aligned guide: if you want a horizontal guide, drag from the top ruler, and if you want a vertical guide you’ll need to drag from the left ruler. Alternatively, you can hold Alt/Option as you drag from the ruler and it’ll create the opposite guide—for instance, if you hold Alt/Option and drag from the horizontal ruler, you’ll create a vertical guide.
If guides are not visible for you, click on the View > Show > Guides menu option. Also, if you’d prefer to set your guides up to a grid, you can make one visible by clicking on the View > Show > Grid menu option. You can choose whether items and layers snap to grids or guides under the View > Snap to menu.
In order to move a guide that you’ve already created, just switch to the Move tool using the tool bar or using the keyboard shortcut V, and click and drag the guide to its new location. To switch its axis (ie horizontal to vertical) hold Alt and drag. To snap the guide to the ruler, hold shift as you drag.
Once you’ve positioned your guides, you may want to lock them to prevent accidental movements. Go to View > Lock Guides to do this.
To remove a single guide, select the Move tool (V), click on a guide and drag it back into the ruler. To get rid of them all, click on View > Clear Guides.
You can change the color and style (dashed or solid line) of your guides under the Guides, Grid, Slices & Count section of Photoshop Preferences.
