The healing brush allows you to fix imperfections in your image such as marks, scratches, and blemishes. It works by sampling a similar area of the image. For instance, to fix a skin blemish, you would choose to sample a patch of clear skin.
The healing brush matches the texture, lighting and shading of the sampled pixels with those of the pixels you’re touching up, so that the fix is seamless and doesn’t look unnatural or out of place.
Instead of sampling another area of the image, you can use a predefined pattern.
[edit] Healing Brush Options
The Mode menu gives you access to a range of blending modes. Most of the time, the Normal setting will suit you. You should read up on blending modes to make the most of this feature.
The Source options determine whether the healing brush will use a user-identified sample as its reference point, or a pre-existing pattern.
When the Aligned checkbox is ticked, the sample point moves relative to the healing brush, rather than using a set point in the image as a sample.
The Sample dropdown allows you to determine where sample information is taken from: just the active layer, the active layer and those below it, or all layers.
[edit] Usage
The healing brush itself is pretty simple to use, hence its reputation as one of Photoshop’s “magic” tools.
First, identify the problem area and identify a visually similar area without the same problem.
Hold down Alt or Option and click on the sample area – the part of the image you’ve selected that doesn’t have any flaws.
Now, use the healing brush like a regular brush and paint over the affected area.
