Import Images

Importing an image into your Photoshop file would seem to be a straightforward matter, but due to a few unfortunate user interface decisions, it’s not always so easy to figure out.
You’ll find some obscure and purpose-specific options for importing various formats into Photoshop under the File > Import menu, but this menu will actually do nothing for you when you need to import an image into your currently open Photoshop file. Ignore this menu for now unless you’re familiar with the formats listed and have a reason to be using them.
The crudest way is to copy an image in—that is, open the image you wish to import, select all and copy it, then paste it into your image.
The best way is to use the Place feature, which can be found under File > Place. Once you click this menu option, a dialogue box will appear allowing you to choose the image you wish to place. Navigate to your desired file and press OK.
The image will appear on the canvas at either its natural size or, if it is bigger than the canvas, it will be reduced in size to fit. You’ll also notice that the Free Transform controls are present so you can scale, rotate and otherwise transform the image before applying the changes and finishing the placement, or import process.
To apply the changes, you must hit enter or click the Tick or Commit Transform button in the Options Bar.
