Overview
The Magic Eraser tool erases solid-colored areas to transparency with a single click. You can also fine tune the settings on the eraser to remove similar colors as well.
Magic Eraser Tool Options
The Magic Eraser tool has various options you can adjust to control the fineness of your erasing.
Tolerance
The Magic Eraser tool is automatically set to a tolerance of 32. The purpose of the tolerance feature is to control the range of colors you want Photoshop to erase. A smaller tolerance will only erase colors very similar to the pixel you choose, while a higher tolerance will erase a broader range of pixels.
Anti-alias
Checking the Anti-alias box will smooth the area that is erased.
Contiguous
Checking the Contiguous box will only erase pixels next to the one you choose. Unchecking the Contiguous box will erase all pixels in the image similar to the pixel you choose.
Sample All Layers
Checking the Sample All Layers box will erase similar pixels in all visible layers, not just the one you have selected.
Opacity
Adjusting the Opacity will change the strength of the erasure. 100% opacity will delete all pixels. A lower opacity will delete fewer pixels. This can be used to soften the edges of the erasure.
